BRIGHAM CITY -- While state 4-A powers Mountain Crest and Timpview flexed their muscles on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the state football playoffs, highly touted East had its hands full with Box Elder Bees.
The Leopards eliminated the Bees from the playoffs with a 21-7 victory, but the powerful East squad needed a late pick-six to finish off the Region 5 team and send their loyal fans home for the season.
It was a tough day for Top of Utah teams overall, as Mountain Crest and Region 1 champion Syracuse were the only teams to advance to the semifinal round.
Preston Curtis was the star of the game, as he scored the opening TD on a short 1-yard plunge.
Then, early in the fourth quarter, Curtis stepped in front of a Shad Watson pass and raced 28 yards to paydirt to put the game out of reach.
East, relegated by the UHSAA to road games as punishment for some player violations despite a near spotless record, gave up a significant amount of passing yards, but held on in the trenches to edge the Bees.
Isaac Valles capped a second-quarter drive with a TD to put East up 14-0 at the break.
But the Bees found life with a 25-scoring pass from Watson to Jayk Brooks. Brooks and Tyler Thornton each caught five passes.
Jake Tolman and Brooks each had fumble recoveries for the young Bees.
