WSU women snare wins in basketball, volleyball

OGDEN — The Weber State Wildcats opened the 2012-13 women’s basketball season with a blowout exhibition win over the Concordia Cavaliers Saturday at the Dee Events Center.

Weber State opened up a big lead early, winning 78-48.

Bethann Ord’s ’Cats were led by sophomore guard Carlee Lough, who finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Kalie Matthews and Laura Palmere each added 11 points.

Desiree Ramos and Regina Okoye both had nine points, Ramos’ points coming on 3-pointers.

Matthews and Jalen Carpenter each had 12 rebounds.

WSU outrebounded the Cavaliers 56-38, while the bench had 30 points.

WSU will take on Adams State at 6 p.m. Monday at the Dee Events Center.

Volleyball

• WEBER STATE DOWNS MONTANA in FIVE: At Swenson Gym, Weber State went the distance on Saturday night, capturing a nail-biting thriller against Montana.

Rallying from a 2-1 deficit, the Wildcats snagged their 10th win of the season by defeating the Grizzlies 25-17, 19-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-13 in Big Sky Conference action at Swenson Gym.

“We’ve been getting more competitive the last couple of weeks; we’ve been very close, and tonight we were able to put it together,” Weber State coach Tom Peterson said.

Redshirt freshman outside hitter Rebecca Fuchs had 15 kills and 12 digs for her second double-double of the week, adding four blocks.
