BYU-Idaho officials reaffirm campus weapons ban

REXBURG, Idaho — Administrators at Brigham Young University-Idaho are standing behind campus policy banning guns from campus — even if a student has a concealed weapons permit.

Officials at the Rexburg campus reaffirmed the policy in response to student concerns about being able to defend themselves during a violent episode on campus.

Director of University Security and Safety Garth Gunderson says the school can ban all weapons from campus because it’s located on private property.

At university approved housing, Gunderson told the Rexburg Standard Journal firearms must be kept in a safe under control of apartment managers.

He says the purpose of the policy is to control and monitor the presence and accessibility of lethal weapons.

In 2011, state lawmakers killed a bill that would have prohibited public universities from banning firearms.
