Bluffdale man sentenced in suicide pact that killed wife

SALT LAKE CITY — A Bluffdale man has been sentenced to 180 days in jail for handing his wife the rifle she used to kill herself in September 2011.

Third District Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills handed down the sentence Monday to 42-year-old Shawn Langford, who earlier pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor reckless endangerment charge.

Langford originally told police he was having trouble with his rifle and working on it when his 33-year-old wife, Rashell Langford, asked to see it.

She put the gun in her mouth and shot herself. She was drunk and high on drugs at the time.

Shawn Langford’s attorney later said her death was intended as a suicide pact that her husband “did not honor.”

Langford also was ordered to serve two years of probation and to complete a substance abuse program.
