U of U director arrested for kidnapping, rape

SALT LAKE CITY — A University of Utah director has been arrested after police say he kidnapped a woman, held her hostage and raped her on campus.

Sandy police allege that 49-year-old Lonnie Dell Norton broke into the woman’s residence early Sunday morning, threatened her with a gun, drove her to a building on campus and raped her.

Norton knew the alleged victim. The Associated Press is not identifying her to avoid revealing a possible victim of sexual assault. Norton’s victim was granted a protective order against him in October.

Norton is a director in the university’s College of Humanities. The university said in a statement that it was aware of the allegations and would not comment on an ongoing investigation.
