"In God We Trust" Utah license plate idea clears hurdle

SALT LAKE CITY — A proposal to bring an "In God We Trust" specialty license plate to Utah has cleared its first hurdle.

An interim legislative committee approved the idea Wednesday. The plate will become official if supporters gather 500 pre-orders for the design, and lawmakers pass a bill during the 2013 session to certify the idea.

The proposed plate would include the "In God We Trust" slogan and an American flag emblem. Drivers would pay $25 a year to display the design, and proceeds would support the Provo-based America’s Freedom Festival.

The project was the brainchild 11-year-old Tate Christensen, who collects motorcycle license plates and recently bought an "In God We Trust" plate from Indiana. He worked with his uncle, Gov. Gary Herbert’s Deputy Chief of Staff Mike Mower, to start the process.
