WASHINGTON TERRACE — Members of the community have one final opportunity to participate in a Thanksgiving run/walk led by Sister Stephanie Mongeon, of Mount Benedict Monastery.
Mongeon and her fellow sisters at the monastery have announced that they will leave Ogden once their property is sold. But Mongeon will be present at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day when the 27th annual event begins in the southwest parking lot at Ogden Regional Medical Center, 5475 Adams Ave. Parkway in Washington Terrace.
Participants are asked to bring either a monetary donation in any amount or nonperishable food items for area charities, which include Catholic Community Services, St. Anne’s Center and the Salvation Army.
Registration is at 8:15 a.m., followed by a prayer and blessing offered by Mongeon.
Runners will take a 5-mile route that will lead them to South Ogden near South Ogden Junior High School and back.
Walkers will go 2 miles through Washington Terrace from the hospital to 500 West, to 5250 South and back.
Mongeon described the event as “no frills.” Participants get a bottle of water, the intrinsic benefits of helping others in need, camaraderie and exercise, Mongeon said, “so no one feels guilty of eating a good, healthy Thanksgiving meal.”
Mongeon said the event has grown from 50 or so in the early 1980s to more than 1,200 in recent years.
Those who want to join the event early are invited to attend Thanksgiving Mass at the education center in the hospital.
