Verla Simpson Dawson of Roy will celebrate her 90th birthday at 1851 W. 4800 South, Roy.

The fifth of 10 children, she was born Nov. 19, 1922, to John George and Edith Hardy Simpson. She came from pioneer heritage whose early ancestors came from England.

She was born and grew up in Syracuse, where her father had a dairy farm of Holstein cows. She attended school in Syracuse and Davis High School. She had two sisters and seven brothers: Sarah Eames, Marylou Hammer, Harold Nephi Simpson, Frank Allen Simpson, Joseph Glen Simpson, James Louis Simpson, Robert Hardy Simpson, Myron John Simpson and Richard Ardeu Simpson.

She met Joseph “Joe” Dawson at a dance in the fall of 1940 when she was a senior at Davis High School. They were married in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple on Jan. 21, 1942. Their children are Kent Dawson, Gary Dawson, Michael Dawson, Marsha Dawson Rose, John Dawson and Bruce Dawson.

During their years together, they moved four times and built three houses, all on 4800 South in Roy.

She helps to head the Dawson clan. She was supportive of her husband when he was mayor, councilman and other civic duties.

She was active in civic duties, especially in her church and Scouting. She taught many women how to sew, cook, quilt and guided future mothers as well. She served as Relief Society president and secretary under two bishops. She enjoyed being a homemaker.
