While the Utah high school football season was a lot of fun in 2012, Top of Utah schools are energized about the winter sports, specifically basketball.
The high school basketball season began last weekend with a few contests in the 1-A ranks. Now the pre-region games begin in earnest, at least for two nights before the Thanksgiving holiday moratorium.
With a handful of boys games on tap tonight in the area, and a near full slate of girls games scheduled, the prep hoops will fill Top of Utah gyms.
Northridge hosts Bountiful in the best boys game tonight involving local schools.
On the girls side, Fremont plays at Sky View, Roy is at Bountiful, Ben Lomond hosts Clearfield, Morgan hosts Mountain Crest and Layton Christian hosts Ogden.
Following a few boys contests on Wednesday -- including Bonneville at Ben Lomond and Weber at Sky View -- teams will take off a few days from practice and games, then resume again on Monday.
It all culminates in the state championships, set for February and March around the state.
Boys champs a year ago included Lone Peak (5-A), Orem (4-A), Hurricane (3-A), South Sevier (2-A) and Layton Christian (1-A).
Girls champs last season included Syracuse (5-A), Timpanogos (4-A), Snow Canyon (3-A), Beaver (2-A) and St. Joseph (1-A).
