LOGAN -- Utah State defensive coordinator Dave Aranda has been nominated for the 2012 Broyles Award that honors the nation's top assistant college football coach.
Aranda is in his first year with the Aggies, who have a chance Saturday to post their first-ever 10-win season when they face lowly Idaho.
Aranda is one of just 13 defensive coordinators across the country to be nominated for the award.
Utah State's defense ranks among the top 21 in the nation in five different categories. It is ranked first in the Western Athletic Conference and eighth nationally in scoring defense, seventh in the nation in sacks and 10th in the country against the run.
Utah State head coach Gary Andersen, meanwhile, has heard his name mentioned for various coaching vacancies, including one at California.
