Our View: Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up: To Ogden company JD Machine. The manufacturer was recognized by the Utah Manufacturing Association for its outstanding operational performance, economic achievement, workplace safety and community involvement.

Thumbs down: To the Utah Transit Authority, for awarding former executive John Inglish a $200,000 a year pension for life. It’s just another disgusting act by the public/private partnership, which exemplifies waste in its outrageous salaries, and now benefits, for its preferred employees.

Thumbs up: To women drivers. Women have safely moved ahead of men on the roads. It seems more women than men now have driver’s licenses across the nation, and the gap will increase in the future.

Thumbs down: To Utah’s immigration courts, which are backlogged for more than a year due to only having one judge. Something needs to be done to speed the procedures. It’s unfair to keep some illegals locked away for long periods of wait.

Thumbs up: To Rep. Jim Matheson, who has announced he will not support Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for House Minority Leader. Matheson is right for being one of a small group of Democrats who oppose the hyper-partisan, ultra-liberal Pelosi, who exemplifies rank partisanship.

Thumbs down: To racist comments in cyberspace after President Obama was re-elected. No matter who one supports, grace after defeat should be mandatory, and it’s sick to resort to racist name-calling. Utah, unfortunately, tied with North Dakota for the highest number of racist tweets after the vote.
