Joseph Dawson of Roy will celebrate his 95th birthday at 1851 W. 4800 South, Roy.
The second son of nine children, he was born Nov. 26, 1917, to John Dawson and Fannie Terry Dawson. His early ancestors came from England and New Zealand.
He was born in Sunset, moved to Ogden and then Roy, where his family had fruit orchards. He attended school in Riverdale and Weber High School. He had one brother and seven sisters. He met Verla Simpson at a dance in the fall of 1940. They were married in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple on Jan. 21, 1942. During their years together, they moved four times and built three houses, all on 4800 South in Roy.
Their children are Kent Dawson, Gary Dawson, Michael Dawson, Marsha Dawson Rose, John Dawson and Bruce Dawson.
Although he was successful in various professions, he is best known for his ability to grow excellent fruit. He owned and managed numerous orchards, where he grew cherries, apples, peaches, apricots, pears and plums. He also grew strawberries, tomatoes, watermelons and cantaloupes for many years.
He served in various civic positions, including Roy councilman and mayor for many years. He also served on several water boards and was instrumental in bringing the secondary water system to Roy. He served in various positions within his church. He continues to lead the Dawson family and his advice and counsel are still sought after and valued.
