Sandy man dies after hitting parked excavator

SANDY— Police say a 49-year-old man from Sandy is dead after his SUV slammed into heavy construction equipment over the weekend.

Sandy police say they responded about 10:30 p.m. Saturday to reports that a man had hit a parked excavator.

Authorities say the area is a construction zone where traffic was being redirected with flashing signs and cones.

Police say the man was driving fast and wasn’t following the new traffic pattern when he veered off the road and hit the excavator.

Authorities believe alcohol was involved.
