MORGAN --There was a parade in Morgan on Wednesday night and it wasn't even the Fourth of July or Homecoming.
Instead the Trojans marched to the free throw line an astonishing 41 times in 32 minutes, making 34 foul shots en route to a 69-53 win over Juan Diego in their season opener.
Senior guard Jake Miles went 15-for-16 from the stripe and had a game-high 27 points to lead the Trojans, who broke the game open with an 11-0 run in the third quarter.
"Long game, lots of fouls, lots of free throws," Wiscombe said. "It was the first game and it's good to get it over with. I thought our kids played hard and thought Juan Diego did too. They were really aggressive and that's good because come region and tournament time, that's how teams play and we've got to learn how to play through that stuff."
Wiscombe played everyone on the bench in an effort to figure out who will be contributors to this year's team.
"We were able to play a lot of kids," he said. "We're still looking to find out who the players are. We've got a lot of kids who are really close. They all have certain skills that they bring to the table. So we'll play a lot of kids in the preseason to find out who that group is that we can count on."
Matt Murdock and Lantzen Toomer both scored nine points for Morgan and Duane Johnson added seven. Wiscombe was also impressed with sophomore forward Bridger Streadbeck, who scored just two field goals, but went all-out with his effort.
"He just runs the court and he's athletic," Wiscombe said. "He does a lot of good things."
Gabe Colosimo scored 14 points to lead Juan Diego (0-2), while teammate Nick Markosian added 12. The Soaring Eagle went to the free throw line 23 times themselves. In the fourth quarter alone, the teams combined to shoot 32 foul shots, dragging the game out to nearly an hour and forty minutes.
Juan Diego is now 0-2 against Region 11 teams after dropping a one-point decision to Bear River last Wednesday.
With a win under its belt, Morgan now heads to Richfield for the 2A/3A Preseason Preview on Friday and Saturday. The Trojans will play Desert Hills and Hurricane -- the two teams from last season's 3-A championship game.
* LAYTON 70, BOX ELDER 56: At Brigham City, Mike Hibbert scored 23 points and the Lancers pulled away with a 24-3 run in the second quarter.
Layton hit eight 3-pointers and went 8-for-9 at the free throw line.
In addition to Hibbert's scoring, the Lancers also got 14 apiece from Jaden Trujillo and Jarriesse Blackmon and eight from Scott Sweeten.
The Bees led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter but couldn't keep up with the Lancers' big run in the second.
Shad Watson hit four 3s on his way to 23 points and Tyler Bate had 16 for the Bees.
* LOGAN 77, OGDEN 61: At Ogden, Tyler Brimhall helped carry the Grizlies to a victory at Ogden, hitting five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 26 points.
Logan jumped out to a 21-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
Outside of Brimhall, no other Logan player scored in double figures. Hyrum Tennant had nine.
For the Tigers, it was senior Spencer Smith leading the way. He hit a pair of 3s and finished with 19 points. Dayton Wright had 11.
Logan pulled away by outscoring the Tigers 24-13 in the final quarter.
