Hooper shouldn't have become a city

Editor,

Many Hooper established residents who remember the good old days reflect on how much better life was before we became a city. What sorry state of affairs we inflicted upon ourselves when we succumbed to incorporation. All we have to do is look northward toward Taylor, West Weber and Warren to see the drastic mistake we made. We would have been better off if we would have let Roy annex us clear to the lake.

Now, we are a one-horse city with an $18.5 million sewer that doesn’t even service half of the town. We are about to be bankrupted for law enforcement. The only way out is another tax.

The residents in the sewer area pay $50 per month, plus an $80 per year increase in their property taxes. The rest of the people pay zip, but they will never have sewer. The area I’d rather be in is the latter. The tragedy took hold when we elected our second set of officials.

Our first mayor didn’t run again and we elected a couple of goose-stepping, egotistical self-indulged councilmen and five puppets. Together they were called the "magnificent seven."

Then we elected a mayor who didn’t have enough gumption to keep them under control. He was a failure in every way. I still marvel at how he was elected to a second term.

The county would have given us a vote on the sewer that sucks, but the magnificent seven rammed it down our throats.

That’s what becoming a city brings with it. I guess we ain’t as smart as our northward friends.
