ST. GEORGE -- A battle is raging in St. George over whether to keep a company that has provided ambulance service for more than 30 years or to hire a Salt Lake City-based company.
The St. George Spectrum reports that a presiding officer is expected to make a recommendation to the state Bureau of Emergency Medical Services whether to renew the Dixie Ambulance contract or go with Gold Cross Ambulance.
The newspaper says more than 200 people showed up largely in support of St. George-based Dixie at a Monday hearing.
St. George city officials say they'll let the state decide.
Gold Cross says it can offer faster, more efficient emergency medical care.
Dixie owners say St. George accounts for most company business and jobs for more than 60 employees are at stake.
