S. Ogden police scuffle with armed bicyclist

SOUTH OGDEN — A man injured an officer and repeatedly attempted to reach inside his coat, which contained a loaded revolver, before being arrested, according to South Ogden police.

Bert Elis Berrett Jr., 39, was booked into the Weber County Jail just before 1 a.m. Sunday for possession of a loaded firearm by a restricted person, evading, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of amphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond has been set at $13,658.

Around 11 p.m. Saturday, a South Ogden police officer tried to stop Berrett, who was on a bicycle in the vicinity of 37th Street and Orchard Avenue, the police department said in a news release. However, Berrett reportedly fled from the officer.

The officer eventually caught up with Berrett and attempted to place him under arrest. Berrett fought with the officer and continually attempted to reach for something in his coat, the news release said.

The officer sustained a laceration to his hand, which required medical attention. Berrett received minor injuries and was treated on the scene by emergency medical responders.

After Berrett was placed in custody, officers located a loaded revolver in his coat as well as amphetamine and marijuana, the news release states.
