FARMINGTON -- The process of choosing a new member of the city council will be a very open affair.
Mayor Scott Harbertson said the selection process to fill the vacancy, created by the resignation of Nelsen Michaelson, will be held in the open at the city council's Dec. 18 meeting.
Council candidates will be given time to make a presentation and council members will have to react or discuss a potential replacement in a public setting. Many municipalities have adjourned to a private session to consider a council appointment and then come out of the meeting and confirmed the appointment in public.
The mayor said he was informed by legal counsel the process needed to be held in public.
Three people, to date, have applied to fill the vacancy, according to City Recorder Holly Gadd.
Councilman John Bilton asked that council members be given electronic access to resumes for candidates as much as a week before the next meeting.
