Dog killed after getting caught in beaver trap in Sandy

SANDY — A Sandy family whose dog died after getting caught in a beaver trap this week says they wish city officials posted more warnings around the devices.

Fifteen-year-old Ben Smith says he was walking his dog, Okami, in Creekside Park on Tuesday when the dog got caught in a trap.

The teen’s mother, Deana Smith, tells KSL the dog apparently stepped into another trap and jumped into the creek, where he eventually drowned.

The boy and his mother say they were unable to get the traps off the dog or save him from the water.

Scott Earl of Sandy’s parks and recreation division called the situation unfortunate. He says the city hired trappers to catch beavers, and asks the trappers to put them in places away from the public.
