FARMINGTON -- Shorebird expert and author Kevin Karlson is looking forward to doing some bird watching along the shores of The Great Salt Lake.
After all, his latest encounter with salt water, involved super storm Sandy bringing Atlantic Ocean water lapping up over the front lawn of his East Coast home.
Karlson is to serve as keynote speaker at the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival to be held May 16-20 at the Legacy Events Center, 1100 W. 151 South, Farmington.
The Davis County Commission recently approved a $1,000 agreement with Karlson, who in addition to speaking at a May 18 dinner gathering, will serve as a celebrity tour guide for some of the festival's bird watching field trips.
"Karlson says his recent experience with super storm Sandy brought him closer to nature than he wanted to be. He had ocean water lapping on his front lawn," Great Salt Lake Bird Festival coordinator Neka Roundy said.
Karlson's home was spared, Roundy said. But the professional birder indicated visiting the Great Salt Lake in May will be a better way to interact with salt water.
"Karlson has been to Utah previously, but as a tourist to our red rock country," Roundy said, "so he is excited to be part of the festival in northern Utah."
In addition to providing the festival's keynote address and guiding some field trips, Karlson will also sign books he has authored or co-authored such as "The Birds of Cape May" and "The Shorebird Guide" respectively.
Karlson, a wildlife photographer, has also published numerous articles on bird identification and natural history for an assortment of magazines, journals, calendars and CD/DVDs. The former photo editor for North American Birds, currently writes the Birder's ID column for Wild Bird Magazine. He is in the process of completing a new book titled "Birding by Impression."
Dinner tickets for Karlson's keynote address are now available online at www.GreatSaltLakeBirdFest.com. Registration for festival field trips begins March 1. Vendor applications will be accepted after Jan. 2 at www.GreatSaltLakeBirdFest.com.
