Prep wrestling: Syracuse claims top spot at Warrior Duels

PLEASANT VIEW -- Several top teams met in the Warrior Duels prep wrestling tournament on Friday and Saturday, but it was the Titans who topped them all.

Host Weber, Bear River, Alta, Logan and Tooele each had individual champions, but the Syracuse Titans rode their talented lineup to a 7-0 run through the dual match competition at Weber High School.

Syracuse went 7-0 in the duals, followed by Weber at 6-1. Bear River, Alta and Logan rounded out the top five.

In the Syracuse-Weber dual, the Titans won 44-21.

Wrestlers who went 7-0 at each division included Syracuse's Brock George (106), Seth Rich (120), Zane Rich (138), and Teague Vigil (152), Tooele's Jarrid Lavios (113) and Zach Coffman (182), Bear River's Dominic Kunder (126) and Kyle Peterson (195), Weber's Tanner Marriott (145, 6-1), Zach Huntsman (170) and Jared Tracy (220), Logan's Hunter Ballams (160) and Jacoby Wildman (285), and Alta's Greg Lamb (132).

In the Stallion Stampede at Stansbury, Herriman, Cyprus and Maple Mountain finished 1-2-3, with Ogden 10th in the team standings.

Girls basketball

* LAYTON CHRISTIAN 44, PAHRANAGAT VALLEY, NEV. 36: At Las Vegas, the Eagles wrapped up a 2-2 record in the holiday tournament with a strong second half.

Down by five at the break, Layton Christian woke up in the third quarter and ran away.

Alyssa Atisme scored 18 points with six steals, while Teneisha Davison scored 16 points with a dozen rebounds for the Eagles.

* SALEM HILLS 61, BEAR RIVER 49: At St. George, the Bears ran into another hot team in tournament action at Desert Hills High.

The game was close through three quarters, but Salem Hills outscored Bear River 25-13 in the final period.

Alyssa Park scored 11 points, and Jordan Theurer added 10 for Bear River. The Bears hurt their cause with a 12 of 25 effort at the foul line.

Tana Hoover scored 14 points, grabbed 11 boards, and swatted four shots to lead the Skyhawks. Missy Belliston scored a game-high 19 points.

Boys basketball

* ELKO, NEV. 76, LAYTON CHRISTIAN 72 (OT): At Salt Lake City, the Eagles are making strides as the Region 17 season nears for the defending state 1-A championship.

LCA let a fourth quarter lead fizzle away, and was outscored 9-5 in the overtime period in the final game of the West Holiday Tournament.

LCA only got the foul line eight times, compared to 30 for the Nevada team.

Colin Greenhill scored 20 points, while Preston Sill scored 16 and Duce Namazi added 15 points.

* HERRIMAN 54, LOGAN 51: At Salt Lake City, Herriman won the Panther Holiday Classic game thanks to a balanced scoring attack.

Four players scored in double figures for the Mustangs led by David Maynard with 15 points.

Jordan Larsen led the Grizzlies with 14 points, including four 3-pointers.

* CLEARFIELD 65, WEST 58: At Salt Lake City, the Falcons improved to 4-3 by beating the host team on the final day of the West Holiday Tournament.

Marquis Jones scored 23 points, Kyler Moore added 17 points and Stockton Larsen added a dozen points for Clearfield.

Denzel Latu scored 12 points to pace the Panthers.
