Father accused of overdosing self, disabled son

SALT LAKE CITY — A 57-year-old man is behind bars in Salt Lake City after allegedly trying to kill himself and his disabled son with prescription drugs.

Jail records show Michael Lund Martin remains behind bars Friday on $100,000 bail.

A report from the jail says staff members at Intermountain Medical Center called police Wednesday while treating two overdose victims.

Police say the man told them he had gotten into a fight with his wife and was feeling overwhelmed when he made a cocktail of prescription and sleeping pills.

Martin reportedly told investigators he gave the same medications to his 31-year-old son, who has cerebral palsy, because he didn’t want to burden anyone else with the job of taking care of the young man.

Officials say the son was released to his mother’s care.
