Mayhem's ‘Takeover’ pits Doss vs. Sutton

LAYTON — A pair of all-around mixed martial artists meet in the headlining fight at Total Mayhem’s New Year’s Eve fight, “The Takeover.”

Layton resident Lee “The Cobra” Doss, who fights out of Mori Academy in Roy faces “Savage” Aaron Sutton from Jabs MMA in Pocatello, Idaho.

Total Mayhem co-owner and fight promoter Isiah Salazar said Sutton is the top 170-pound fighter coming from Idaho.

Sutton fought as an amateur for Total Mayhem exactly one year ago to the day and returns on New Year’s Eve as a professional.

Salazar describes both opponents as two well-rounded fighters, with good backgrounds in submissions, wrestling and striking.

“With this main event, it’s anyone’s guess,” Salazar said, “It’s going to be a very interesting fight.”

The undercard features a rematch between Kensei Sato, who fights out of Mori Academy, and Nick Burgos, who fights out of Jeremy Horn’s Elite Performance gym in West Jordan.

Burgos took their last fight, so this is Sato’s chance to redeem himself.

“Kensei is out for some revenge,” Salazar said.

The two fighters come from different fighting styles and their smaller weight-class will make for a fun match.

Burgos is a striker, while Sato is a skilled jiujitsu practitioner.

“So it’s going to be a chess match,” Salazar said, “and at 125 pounds, these guys are going to go very fast; these guys are going to move.”

“The Takeover” will also be the professional debut of Jose Rodriguez, a strong stand up fighter that comes off of a win at an amateur Muay Thai fight.

Rodriguez, who fights out of One Hit MMA in Clearfield, faces independent fighter Colton Hooley.

Along with the headline fighters, “The Takeover” will have a total of 10 professional and amateur matches featuring fighters from local gyms and fighting independently.

Following the MMA action, spectators will be able to ring in the New Year by dancing to two hours of music spun by DJ Mills.

Total Mayhem’s “The Takeover,” will start at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Davis Conference Center, 1651 N. 700 West, Layton. Tickets are $25 or $50 for a VIP pass.
