UHP makes 107 DUI arrests over New Year’s weekend

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Highway Patrol officers say they arrested 107 people on suspicion of driving under the influence during the four-day New Year’s weekend.

Troopers say this year’s statistics run from Dec. 28 to Jan. 1, and are higher than last year’s numbers. Troopers made 93 DUI arrests during the same weekend a year ago.

UHP ramped up its staffing in an effort to keep drunken New Year’s revelers off the road. The “Good Wheels Program” of the New Car Dealers of Utah donated $5,000 to the agency, which helped fund an additional 20 DUI enforcement shifts during the weekend.

Other extra shifts were funded by the Utah Highway Safety Office.
