High school graduation rates on the rise in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s high school graduation rates went up again in 2012 — the fourth straight year they’ve increased.

Figures from the Utah State Office of Education show that 78 percent of high school students graduated in 2012. The state’s graduation rates have risen steadily since they came in at 69 percent in 2008.

The dropout rate in Utah’s high schools has decreased steadily during this time span. Twenty percent of high school students dropped out of Utah high schools in 2012 — down from 29 percent in 2008.

The state figures show that graduation rates have been on the rise for all ethnic groups. But white and Asian students continue to graduate at significantly higher rates than Hispanic, American Indian and black students.

State-by-state comparisons won’t be available until the fall.
