Smith leads Lancers to win over Copper Hills

LAYTON — If she could have avoided early foul trouble, Maddi Smith was tracking gaudy offensive numbers.

Smith, a junior small forward and three-year starter, scored 14 first-quarter points and the Lancers limited Copper Hills to single-digit scoring over the final three quarters Friday in a 56-32 non-league victory.

“I just tried to do what I could on defense and let the offense take care of itself,” Smith said. “I just happened to be open. If I was open, I was taking the shot.”

The 16-year-old Smith splashed in a game-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds, three assists and one steal. She drew her third personal foul at 6:15 of the third quarter and Layton High leading by 18 points.

“It feels really good to be back winning,” Smith said. “We’re looking at it one game at a time and letting the past go. I have a problem getting in foul trouble, and I’m not sure what it is.”

Jaden Anderson had 10 points and Cassidy Anderson went 3 of 5 from the floor for seven points with four boards, five assists and four steals for the Lancers (8-3 overall), who ended a two-game slide. Meagan Sorenson finished with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting with four rebounds, two steals and one block.

Layton shot 43.6 percent (24 of 55) — 40.0 percent (2 of 5) on 3-point attempts — with 35 rebounds, 18 turnovers, 17 assists and 21 steals.

• LOGAN 66, NORTHRIDGE 51: At Northridge High, the Knights fell behind early but made a fourth-quarter run.

Megan Mills paced Logan with 15 points and Lauren Mott had 14.

Northridge’s Brittley Eldredge scored four points and grabbed 11 rebounds, eight offensive.

• BONNEVILLE 48, BOUNTIFUL 34: At Bountiful, the undefeated Lakers earned the scoring edge in each of the first three quarters, earning a tough road win.

• SYRACUSE 54, PLEASANT GROVE 52: At Pleasant Grove, the defending state 5-A champion Titans earned a road victory with a solid team effort.
