KAYSVILLE -- Needing only a home-court victory over a middling Viewmont squad, the Davis Darts seemed poised to wrap up a perfect 11-0 preseason before moving on to Region 1 play next week.
The Vikings clearly had other thoughts as McKay Johnson buried a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to give coach Jeff Emery a 62-61 victory over his alma mater in front of a raucous crowd, snapping the Darts' winning streak.
"(The rivalry) means a lot to both schools," Emery said. "I'm telling you, (Davis) is as good as anybody in 5-A. We've played Lone Peak and I told the kids coming in that they're one of the teams that could beat Lone Peak on the right night.
"We've been good at times, but we've been a little, I call it, bipolar defensively. We're good in stretches and we're not so good in stretches. We've been talking about it for some time that if we're going to beat good teams, especially in a close game, then we're going to have to do it with our defense. We finally got a stop at a critical time."
Following Johnson's shot, the Darts got a good look out of a timeout, but Abel Porter's runner at the buzzer came off the rim, erupting the Vikings into an on-court celebration
The contest was tight throughout with nine ties, nine lead changes, while neither team ever built more than a seven-point lead.
It was the story of the three McKays plus Jarom Tye for Viewmont. While Tye scored a team-high 17 points to go with eight rebounds, starters McKay Johnson, McKay Butler and McKay Richins combined for 36 points.
The Darts led 17-14 after one quarter, before the Vikings rallied to knot the score at 32 by halftime. Trailing 55-52, Zac Fuller knocked down a three ball with 3:17 to play to tie the score. Following a pair of Tye free throws, Fuller nailed another trey to give the Darts a 58-57 lead with 1:40 left. An Alex Morrell free throw with 27 seconds left put Davis up 61-59, setting the stage for Johnson's heroics.
Braden Koelliker had a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for Davis, while Jesse Wade scored 15.
* BOUNTIFUL 46, LAYTON 43: At Bountiful, another barn-burner between Davis County schools ended when Jordan Bleak nailed a late 3-pointer to give the Braves the edge. Jarriesse Blackmon led the Lancers with 18 points, while Scott Sweeten added nine points.
Sam Merrill had 15 and Zach Seljaas added 14 for Bountiful.
* SYRACUSE 70, AMERICAN FORK 59 (2OT): At Syracuse, the Titans persevered through two extra periods for the win. Syracuse went 13-2 in the second OT, nailing free throws down the stretch.
Diante Mitchell led the way with a game-high 31 points and 11 boards and three steals. Michael Phelps added 15 points with five rebounds. Daulton Whatcott added 10 points.
Ryan Andrus paced the Cavemen with 38 points.
