SALT LAKE CITY -- A Kearns woman has been sentenced to five years to life in prison for the death of a disabled woman who lived in her home.
The sentence was imposed Friday on 51-year-old Sherrie Beckering, who earlier was convicted of felony aggravated abuse in the 2011 death of 22-year-old Christina Harms.
She's accused of ignoring abuse that killed Harms, who had fetal alcohol syndrome. Harms died after being bound crucifixion-style in a closet.
Beckering's daughter, Cassandra Shepard, was Harms' legal guardian. The three lived in the same house with Beckering's husband, Dale.
He was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison after being convicted of aggravated abuse. Both Beckerings claim they had no idea the abuse was occurring in the house.
Shepard awaits trial in February on a murder charge.
