Coyote kills dog along popular SLC trail

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Salt Lake City woman has issued a warning to pet owners after her dog was attacked and killed by a coyote on a popular hiking trail near the city.

Teri Mallard says she was descending Ensign Peak on Friday morning when the coyote emerged from behind a tree and attacked Scout, her 13-year-old Jack Russell terrier.

She says the 16-pound dog was about 20 yards ahead of her and dragged away by the coyote.

She found the dog's body later in the day.

Utah Division of Wildlife Resources officials say coyote sightings are on the rise in Salt Lake County.

They say the Ensign Peak area is an on-leash area, and that having a leash on a dog is a good way to protect the animal while hiking.
