Thurman Scott Preece of Layton will celebrate his 80th birthday with family and friends on Jan. 3.

He was born Jan. 3, 1933, to George W. and Hazel Marie Scott in Cove. Raised on the family farm in Cove, he is the youngest of eight children. He attended school there until he was 10, when the family moved to Clearfield. He finished his education in Davis County.

On March 23, 1962, he married Sandra Sessions Kelsey. Their vows were later solemnized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple on May 12, 1964. They have five children.

He was an active member of the LDS Church, where he served as a ward clerk for many years. The couple served as temple workers in Ogden and Denver for five years.

He retired from Hill Air Force Base after 37 years of service and operated Preece Taxidermy for more than 30 years.

He enjoys the outdoors, where he spends time camping, fishing and hunting with his family and friends.

Their children are Larry and Sheri Preece, Debra French, Wendy and James Norberg, Steven and Denise Kelsey, and Scott and Tamie Kelsey.
