The gun control dialogue is getting a little old (Jan. 5 letter, "Assault weapons should be abolished"). Being a typical hunter-gatherer Utah guy, I firmly believe that the "right to own and bear arms," is a right and not a wrong. I believe the current controls on ownership and use of firearms, including fully automatic weapons is adequate. Don't make me say it again "guns don't kill people, people do."
In response the above referenced letter, there are a law abiding people in Utah who use semi-automatic weapons for big game hunting. Also I have never seen a hunter use one to hunt ducks and geese.
If an individual is going to commit an atrocity like Columbine and Sandy Hook, no amount of gun control will prevent that person from committing a senseless act. Unfortunately the Lanza killer was unobstructed in acquiring the weapons he used.
One of my concerns is that the total failure of the Obama administration's "Fast and Furious" fiasco, is in part, going to put our Second Amendment rights in jeopardy.
I certainly can't predict future gun control and seizure actions, but I am pretty sure they are coming. I would think that comprehensive education of those persons who use and purchase firearms would be a good place to start. Concealed carry training, although a little weak, is an example of citizen awareness. Those that own weapons, be prepared!
