SLC Airport security found fewer guns in 2012

SALT LAKE CITY — The Transportation Security Administration reports fewer guns were found in passengers’ carry-on bags at security checkpoints in Utah airports last year.

The agency reported Tuesday that officers found 24 guns at Utah’s airports in 2012, compared with 27 firearms that were found the year before.

Security detected 20 guns at Salt Lake City International Airport in 2012, along with two firearms at Provo Airport and one each at St. George Municipal Airport and Cedar City Regional Airport.

TSA at Salt Lake City International Airport found 26 firearms in 2011, and another gun was found at the St. George airport that year.

The agency says preliminary data for 2012 shows more than 1,500 guns were found by TSA officers nationwide. That’s more than four per day.
