Ogden Canyon is closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., or 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., depending. During these hours, all valley traffic must drive over Trapper's Loop or the North Ogden Divide, whether it's a white-out, blizzard, has icy roads or an emergency.
Why? It is stated in print that the pipeline needs to be finished by June 1, in order to avoid water rationing.
But, if one of our kids goes off the North Ogden Divide, over the side of the road on Trappers, hits a large animal, in the middle of the night, who would know?
The word on the street is: It takes more employees to keep the canyon open, so closing it will improve the bottom line for the contractor. The research before the project began was insufficient and poorly done, leading to problems. The equipment is faulty and insufficient.
The basic contract was poorly negotiated, giving the contractor too much power with no consideration for the impact on resident lives.
If time is so critical, why is the contractor not working on Sunday? (At least not Sunday, Jan. 6, at 4:15 p.m.)
We waiting up to 20 minutes to get through the canyon in both directions; now we and our children have been asked to drive dangerous roads in the middle of the night in the middle of the winter.
This is unacceptable and unconscionable.
