OGDEN -- The owner of an Ogden apartment building says a female tenant who had been held against her will for several days and was apparently cut made a daring escape to freedom Wednesday.
"She was so scared she was shaking," Andrew Wherlock, who owns a home at 2530 Harrison Blvd. converted into four apartment units, told the Standard-Examiner. "It really freaked her out. She was scared for her life."
Jonathan Odell, 35, who barricaded himself inside the woman's apartment, was eventually arrested by Ogden police in connection with the incident.
Odell was booked into Weber County Jail for attempted criminal homicide, aggravated kidnapping, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, interruption of a communication device, and five felony warrants.
The terrifying ordeal began around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Wherlock said.
Wherlock, who lives in a second-story apartment next to the victim's, was awakened by the sound of someone banging on his window.
Wherlock ran down from his apartment to a parking area at the rear of the building and found that the victim had crawled out of the window of her unit and was standing on the ledge of the roof.
Wherlock got a ladder, helped the woman get down from the roof, took her to the basement and gave her his cellphone to call 911.
The woman, who is in her 40s, was bleeding profusely from wounds to her neck and arm, Wherlock said.
Ogden police said the woman had multiple injuries but they did not elaborate.
She was taken to an area hospital and was in stable condition Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
The woman had apparently been held captive in the apartment for several days by Odell and finally managed to escape after he fell asleep, Wherlock said.
Odell had only been staying in the woman's apartment a few days.
"I got a really bad vibe off the guy (Odell)," Wherlock said, adding that he heard the woman arguing with someone in the apartment Saturday.
There was a large amount of blood in the woman's apartment from the incident, he added.

After the woman escaped, Ogden police converged on the apartment building and got Odell to surrender about 30 minutes later.
"They were really patient and did a really good job talking him out."
