CENTERVILLE -- A 30-year-old man thought he could avoid officers by popping into an apartment where his girlfriend's grandmother lived.

Instead, the 77-year-old woman ran outside to let police know where Justin Ray Anderson was hiding, said Assistant Police Chief Paul Child.

Police were called to a shoplifting in progress at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday at Walmart in Centerville. When they arrived, they saw a man matching the description behind the store carrying a backpack.

The man, later identified as Anderson, ran into an apartment in the Cedar Springs complex. Police lost sight of him, but the woman ran out of her apartment to let police know where he was, Child said. The woman had left her 46-year-old daughter and 16-year-old granddaughter in the home. Neither were Anderson's girlfriend.

Officers found and arrested Anderson in an upstairs bedroom without incident and booked him into Davis County Jail on suspicion of two counts of shoplifting, evading a police officer, trespassing and possession of burglary tools. The stolen property was recovered in the backpack, which Anderson discarded as he fled from police.

The Davis County Attorney's Office is reviewing the case before filing formal charges in 2nd District Court.
