Huddle Up Conference offers help to parents and youths

SOUTH OGDEN — Area youths and their parents are invited to attend this year’s Huddle Up Conference planned for Jan. 25 and 26 at Wasatch Church.

Huddle Up is a group of youth pastors from area evangelical churches who get together to plan activities for young people throughout the year.

The annual Huddle Up Conference includes seminars for parents from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 25.

Area youth pastors said the event will be an important one for parents if they are to learn to help keep their children from trouble.

“The average age of first view of pornography is in elementary school,” said Chad Holiday, a junior high pastor at Washington Heights Church. “By the time they are in junior high, they are hooked a lot of times.”

Next Generations Pastor Adam Zulim, of Crossroads Christian Fellowship, said the easy and quick access of pornography makes keeping it from children more difficult.

Zach Lehr, a youth pastor at Crossroads Christian Fellowship, said Utah is the No. 1 ranked state for youths viewing pornography. He said he was quoting a statistic from a Harvard University study.

And the pastors said the other topics to be discussed at the conference will be equally helpful for parents.

The $5 parent portion includes four 45-minute seminars. Parents will be able to choose two.

Parents may attend either “White Picket Fences: a Parent Workshop for Less Than Perfect Parents,” which will come with a booklet titled “Making Wise Choices,” or a seminar helping parents recognize and deal with their children using drugs.

Next, they will chose to either attend an Internet safety presentation by a police officer with the Utah Task Force, or one titled “When My Kid Needs Help.”

No RSVP is necessary, but may be made at washingtonheights.org.

Limited child care is available.

Parents may pay at the door.

For information on the parent workshop, parents may call

801-781-4220.

The next day, youths may participate in a free day of seminars from

9 a.m. to 3 p.m., which includes a free lunch.

Those who participate will choose from among 16 seminars covering a wide range of topics.

Washington Heights Church is at 1770 E. 6200 South in South Ogden.
