Woman in hospital after avalanche

SALT LAKE CITY — A 43-year-old woman is recovering after being injured by an avalanche in the backcountry above Salt Lake City.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal says Elisabeth Malloy, of Salt Lake City, was skiing with a male companion when they triggered the avalanche late Saturday afternoon in Millcreek Canyon.

He says they wore avalanche beacons, and the man was able to dig her out and then revive her with CPR.

Hoyal says Malloy was taken to University Hospital in serious condition with head injuries. The man escaped injury.

The avalanche danger was rated “moderate” to “considerable” Sunday in Utah’s mountains after recent heavy snowfall.
