PROVO -- At the Marriott Center, Gaels guard Matthew Dellavedova drilled a running 40-foot shot as time expired to give St. Mary's a thrilling 70-69 West Coast Conference victory over the Cougars, hadning BYU its first WCC loss.
Dellavedova and BYU's Marty Haws matched shots over the final minutes. Haws hit a long jumper to give BYU the 67-65 lead, but Dellavedova answered to tie the game with 34.6 seconds left.
BYU ran the clock down for the final shot, and Haws' jumper with 2.5 seconds left looked to be the game-winner in front of a rowdy crowd.
The the Gaels immediately inbounded to a running Dellavedova, who launched a long shot that ripped the nets.
Stephen Holt led St. Mary's (14-4, 3-1 WCC) with 22 points. Dellavedova added 18.
Haws paced BYU (14-5, 4-1 WCC) with 23 points. Matt Carlino added 16, while Brandon Davies chipped in with 12.
The Cougars led 34-31 at halftime.
