Book availability policy should apply to school prayer

Editor,

Davis School District has reversed their position regarding the book “In Our Mothers’ House” as only available to students presenting a permission slip (Jan. 15, “‘In Our Mothers’ House’ back on shelves in Davis School district District”). Spokesman Chris Williams reported that the district now states that parents who don’t want their children to read it will have to tell the district.

It occurs to me that this same policy could, and should, apply regarding parents who don’t want their children to say the Pledge of Allegiance and/or to pray at school.

Rather than denying all children’s rights on this matter to accommodate those who object, perhaps we could adopt the same position and restore the rights of the vast majority.
