Thumbs up: To the national debate over gun control that has been initiated by the president's proposals. We hope that there is a spirited debate, that both sides on various issues articulate their arguments well, and that Congress and the Obama administration can reach some degree of consensus.
Thumbs down: To criminals who are using low-tech methods of casing homes. Be careful of persons asking if unknowns live at your home or even those who offer to do odd jobs in and around the home. Local police report that many crooks case the home that way.
Thumbs up: To Karlee Porter, of Clearfield. The 21-year-old won the "Create Your Style" art quilting design contest at the International Quilt Festival in Houston last November.
Thumbs down: To the fact that Clearfield Jobs Corps will lose student slots. We really can't afford to lose as much as 400 in enrollment. We challenge officials to find funding for these programs which help the motivated to earn a good salary and achieve a good future.
Thumbs up: To local Scouts who earn all 135 merit badges offered by the Boy Scouts of America. Two of the more recent Scouts to achieve this goal are brothers Addison and Landon Weeks of South Ogden.
Thumbs down: To the failure of many pols to adhere to the Utah Compact when trying to craft sensible immigration law. We urge readers to go to http://theutahcompact.com and read the five principles established, which push for practical, compassionate solutions to our immigration concerns.
