Editor,
All of the posturing by the Republicans about the deficit and the so-called fiscal cliff are just a smoke screen to reduce the spending that is being done to the entitlements: Social Security and Medicare. Those entitlement programs have little to do with the deficit that is owed by this government. The deficit was built up by the Republican-controlled Congress during the Bush years (two unfunded wars and reduced taxes for the rich) and is behind all the posturing that they are arguing about.
The Republicans in the Congress really want a reason to go after those entitlements rather than work to pay for the bills that they added to the United States’ financial woes. If they were to admit it, rather than trying to sway the public to agree with their twisted political ideas, the deficit could be reduced in short order. Medicare and Social Security have little at all to do with the deficit, The GOP needs to quit trying to control the government with any means possible to help the upper 2 percent while attacking the middle-class all the time.
They need to own up to the bills they have incurred during the past eight or ten years and work to pay for them. Put the blame where it truly belongs and quit trying to cut the entitlements for the lower and middle class to pay for the bills that they, themselves incurred. Only the Congress can legally do that.
