2 Escalante men killed after plane hits power line

ESCALANTE -- Two Escalante men were killed when a small plane crashed into transmission power lines in Garfield County.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Becki Bronson says 56-year-old Paul Bowmar and 59-year-old Nicholas Rezmick were killed Saturday afternoon in the crash near State Route 12 between Escalante and Boulder.

She told KSL that the men were on a recreational flight and were killed instantly when their single-engine plane hit the power lines.

Bronson says Bowmar apparently was an experienced pilot, and preliminary reports do not indicate any mechanical failure or hazardous flying conditions.

The 3:30 p.m. accident is under investigation by federal authorities.

Bronson says two people were killed in May 2009 when their single-engine plane clipped some power lines in the same vicinity.
