Editor,
I have a confession to make; I used to be a conspiracy theorist. I started to follow politics and current events after the 9/11 attacks. I was appalled and frightened of all the things my government was doing under the Bush administration. I was convinced that it was the end of freedom, liberty, and our democracy.
I compared President Bush to Hitler, and I believed the U.S. was soon to become a fascist, Nazi-like dictatorship. Obviously that reality never materialized. I feel silly for believing all those things, and I feel ashamed for succumbing to Godwin’s Law.
So, I can somewhat relate to all the hysteria we’re witnessing right now concerning President Obama’s recommendations for attempting to curb gun violence, however I have grown more wise and rational since my conspiracy theory days. All this talk of “they’re coming for our guns” is really a bunch of silly nonsense.
I’m assuming that most are letting their emotions get the better of them and that they know that it’s Congress that writes and passes legislation, not the president.
Do people really think the GOP-controlled house is going to pass any of Obama’s recommended legislation? I have also yet to see a single rational argument on how any one of the 23 executive actions are going to take any rights away from law-abiding citizens. Did people even bother to read them? When the black helicopters and FEMA troops never materialize, their all going to feel as silly as I did.
