Utah Olympic Oval chosen as site for 2014 U.S. Olympic trials

KEARNS — The Utah Olympic Oval has been chosen as the site of the 2014 U.S. Olympic trials for short-track and long-track speedskating.

U.S. Speedskating announced the decision Wednesday following a monthlong bidding process.

The long-track trials in Kearns, a Salt Lake City suburb, are set for Dec. 27 through Jan. 1, followed by the short-track trials from Jan. 2 to Jan. 5.

Short-track will select as many as 12 spots for the Olympic team — six men and six women. Athletes will compete for a spot on the team in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 meters.

Up to 20 long-track athletes —10 men and 10 women — will be chosen.

The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be held in Sochi, Russia.
