Roy approves new tobacco store

ROY -- The city council approved a business license for a new tobacco store to be located in the Roy Marketplace, 5348 S. 1900 West.

The city only allows four tobacco stores in its city. One of the smoke shops in the marketplace recently closed down.

The new tobacco store will be in the south end of the marketplace. Harmon’s grocery store, also located in the marketplace no longer sells tobacco.

City planner Jared Hall said one of the tobacco stores that is in the west end of the city is open only because it was grandfathered into the ordinance regarding where tobacco stores can be located, so if it ever shuts down, another could not be built in that zone.

The stores are now only allowed in major commercial zones along 1900 West.
