SYRACUSE -- Officers on motorcycles should be a scene residents in this community see sometime in the coming months.
With the help of grants, the department has purchased two motorcycles and gear to equip two officers to put on bikes in the near future, Chief Garret Atkin says.
Atkin gave a briefing on plans for the new motorcycle option for the SPD at a recent council meeting and said he is working to identify two officers interested in working on the bikes and then plans to send them for training and potentially implement them into service sometime this spring or summer. He said the traffic unit will be an asset to the department and will play a role in improving the safety of the community.
Costs to purchase the bikes and equipment for the new unit are estimated to be $64,197.
