SMITHFIELD -- The Bonneville High Lakers were pushed to the limit on Thursday evening, topping Sky View 49-48 to keep their Region 5 and overall record perfect in girls basketball action.
"That's a very satisfying win. Sky View is a great team," Bonneville coach Mike Russell said.
Down 11-7 after a quarter, the Lakers battled back for a 21-18 lead at the half. The score was tied after three quarters.
The final period was even more back-and-forth.
In the late going, the Lakers built a six-point lead, but the Bobcats stormed back to build a four-point edge. Bonneville cut the lead to 48-46, then grabbed a rebound with 20 seconds left.
After Emilie Volk's shot bounced off, Laker teammate Lexie Stratford got the rebound and tossed it out to Cortney Porter, who buried the 3-pointer for the winning shot.
"The key to this game was offensive rebounds," Russell said. "We had 18, with Montana Perkins grabbing five of them. They threw some junk defenses at us, and Porter and Stratford handled them.
"We'll be a better team for having seen what they threw at us. We feel fortunate to get the win.
Porter led the Lakes with 14 points and three steals. Kayla Eilerstson scored 12, Volk added 10, and Stratford added nine points and four rebounds.
Bonneville 6 of 6 from the foul line on the day.
Tara Goldman led Sky View with 14 points, while Danee Evans added 11 and Lindsey Jensen checked in with 10.
* BOX ELDER 37, MOUNTAIN CREST 34: At Hyrum, the were down by 10 after a 1-point second quarter, but took control in the second half to earn the win.
Mitzi Munns led the Bees with 11 points including one 3-pointer, while teammate Megan Sutton added 10 more. Casey Quayle scored eight points.
Three girls scored six each for the Mustangs.
* LOGAN 67, ROY 60: At Logan, the Royals fell behind 33-23 at the break but battled to get back in the game.
Kaitlyn Hurley scored 25 points and Aubrey Porter added 13, each hitting three 3-pointers. But it wasn't enough.
Catherine Mount had 17 points, and Lauren Mott added 16 for host Logan.
* OGDEN 46, STANSBURY 44 (2OT): At Stansbury, the Tigers refused to yield to the home team, but finally lost in the second OT.
Stansbury's Erika Alvey hit three free throws at the end of regulation to send the game to OT. Alvey scored 20 points and went 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Morgan Jones scored a dozen points and Amy Ulrich scored nine for the Tigers, who didn't help their cause with a 13 of 31 mark at the free throw line.
BEAR RIVER 67, GRANTSVILLE 43: A Garland, Terrell Fridall scored 14 points and added 10 steals and seven rebounds to lead the host Bears past foul-happy Grantsville.
Alyssa Park scored 12 points, Kelsey Hancock added 10 and Mishae Nelson chipped in with nine points for Bear River, which went 28 of 44 at the foul line.
Whitney Turner led the Cowgirls with 17 points. The Bears led 32-11 at halftime.
* MORGAN 54, TOOELE 37: At Tooele, the Trojans kept their league record umblemished with a balanced scoring effort.
Nine players scored, with 16 girls playing in the win McKenzie Schenck scored 13 while Kennedy Gibson added 10 points. Schenck also had six steals and tied Rashel Blazzard with a team-high six rebounds.
