Bears win Region 11 title at home

GARLAND — Bear River High rolled to the Region 11 wrestling championships, whipping the field in impressive fashion on Saturday on its home mats.

With nine individual champions, the Bear tallied 575.5 points, followed by Tooele (393), Stansbury (341.5), Morgan (231), Ogden (106.5), Grantsville (74) and Ben Lomond (49).

Bear River had weight division championship efforts from Nickolas Bingham (113), Brady Haramoto (120), Dominic Kunder (126), Tanner Vanvalkenberg (132), Tanner Christensen (145), R. Jay Christensen (152), Kyle Peterson (195), Tony Carreno (220) and BroDee Stevenson.

T. Christensen decisioned teammate Toby Haltiner, 28-5, in the 145-pound final, while R. Christensen topped teammate Braxton Conger in the 152-pound final.

The Bears also had runner-up efforts from Jeremy Zollinger (106), and Dalyn Bergman (160), Conner Hughes (170), Chad Hornberger (182).

Morgan was led by Jayden Pentz, the champion at 106. Teammate Tyson Spens was second at 138, Thomas Ericson was second at 285, while Wyatt Ekblad was second at 195.

Ogden was paced by Jackson Barrett, who was third at 160, and teammate Hilario Hernandez was third at 220.

The top finishers will now prepare for the state 3-A championships, set for Feb. 15-16 at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center.

State stages drill team finals

At Utah Valley’s UCCU Center, Duchesned edged Rockwell Academy to claim another state 1-A drill team championship in front of a big crowd of drill and dance fans.

Rockwell finished second, with Piute third. Rich finished fifth.

In the 2-A championshhips, Manti topped South Sevier for the championship, with South Summit third. In the 3-A championship, Uintah topped the field for the title, with Cedar second and Canyon View third.

Duchesne and Uintah repeated as team champions, while Manti was second a year ago.
