Bill to deal with head injuries

SALT LAKE CITY — A local lawmaker’s bill to protect athletes with head injuries has cleared a House committee and will now go to the House for further consideration.

The House Health and Human Services Standing Committee gave unanimous approval to move HB 58, sponsored by Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clinton, to the House for review.

The measure amends existing state guidelines for how head injuries are handled and requires any amateur sports organization or its agent to immediately remove a child from participation in a sporting event when the group or agent is aware of a head injury to the participant.

The bill does provide some protections for government entities who make available fields where head injuries occur, as well as school organizations where injuries may happen during recess.
