‘In God We Trust’ plates may pass

SALT LAKE CITY — Motorists may be able to get license plates with “In God We Trust” on them if legislation, which passed the House on Monday, is made into law.

The bill, HB 34, would give motorists the ability to get the new plate as long as at least 500 state residents apply for the specialty plate. House sponsor, Rep. Val Peterson, R-Orem, said the specialty plate will cost $42, with $18 going toward the registration costs, while $25 will be added as a donation for the state’s Department of Heritage and Arts.

Rep. Johnny Anderson, R-Taylorsville, was one of the few representatives to vote against the measure. He said he doesn’t believe state license plates should be used as a fundraiser.

The bill advances to the Senate for further consideration.
